Feel versus real: why your serve looks nothing like it feels
There is a gap between what your serve feels like and what your serve actually is, and it is the single biggest reason the same mistake survives a thousand reps. Coaches have a name for it: feel versus real. You think your shoulders turn. On video, they barely move. You think you shift your weight forward. Your back foot never leaves the ground.
Coaches name this gap independently
This is not a marketing idea, it is a coaching observation made in the same words across years. Mark Renneson of Third Shot Sports put it plainly in 2017:
Using video allows you to see yourself from the outside and this can bring into focus the gap between what we think we are doing and what is really going on.
Angela Caltagirone of PB5Star described the same thing in 2025, as
the gap between how something feels on the court and what's happening.
What people say the first time they watch
The gap is not subtle when you finally see it. The reaction is remarkably consistent, and it is always some version of surprise:
After seeing myself on video I realized it looks completely different than how I imagined in my head. I was standing almost straight up.
The lesson in that quote is the whole thing. The player was not lazy and was not untalented. They simply could not see themselves, so the correction they needed was invisible, and it stayed invisible until a camera made it real.
Why seeing has to come first
A habit you cannot feel is a habit you cannot fix. You can read every cue for a good serve and still repeat the same flaw, because the flaw does not feel like a flaw from the inside. That is why filming yourself is step one, and why the second step, naming exactly what the body did, matters just as much. Seeing that your shoulders do not turn is useful only if someone then tells you that is the thing to change.
See what you cannot feel
